Humidity
and Heat Could Effect LASIK Surgery Results
UV rays
from the sun combined with humidity can cause damage to the eyes.
Researchers recently discovered that patients who’ve had LASIK
procedures and living in hot and humid areas had to go through a
follow up after their surgery from the damaged that the heat had
caused. Researchers gathered enough information during their research
to suggest that patients living in hot and humid climates were at
a higher risk and most of them had to revisit for a follow up procedure.
During the research cycle, the study results from research revealed
that 16% of the LASIK patients who lived in colder climates did
not have to do follow up procedures, but half of the 400 living
in hot and humid climates did have to follow up after LASIK surgery.
The researchers from Wake Forest University claimed that those who
lived in hot and humid areas had negative results or outcomes following
LASIK. Those who lived in cooler climates did not have any problems
at all following LASIK surgery.
Some people feel that the discrepancies in the researchers’
findings pose new questions while shedding new information on LASIK.
Researchers’ from North Carolina believes that those who live
in highly heated and humid areas are at risk of infection of the
cornea following LASIK surgery. The infection can cause swelling
which the eye will retain fluid and the excess hydration can result
to under correction during LASIK surgery. Swelling causes other
problems, since the cornea takes on a new shape, which can lead
to major problems.
Avoiding Hot and Humid Weather
During the summer months, studies suggest that those who have LASIK
surgery should avoid hot and humid climates. Your surgeon will consider
your risks and benefits more closely, especially if you live in
a hot and humid climate.
Technology is moving rapidly into the future, which has brought
forth some improvements despite of the risks involved for LASIK
patient’s who live in hot and humid climates. The new equipment
today gives the surgeon’s the alternative to adjust and monitor
the equipment in order to adapt the light to the patient’s
cornea.
The manufacturers of LASIK equipment today has improved their equipment
and has provided unique instructions for the surgeon’s that
perform LASIK. The instructions can help the doctor monitor the
humidity and room temperature. With the latest equipment doctors
can now work smoothly with fewer risks.
Protecting your vision:
You can help your doctor avoid risks of overcorrection or under
correction during LASIK surgery by informing him or her that you
live in a humid, hot climate. Make sure you talk with your doctor
in great lengths about the outcomes of LASIK, as well as the benefits
and risks. Talk to your doctor about the latest LASIK equipment
in order to test his or her knowledge.
If you doctor does not provide good answers, or suggest that you
do not need to worry about equipment, you are wise to seek another
surgeon. You can also wait until the weather is colder before you
have LASIK surgery. Waiting is most likely your best bet, since
it can help you and your doctor cut back the risks of under correction
or overcorrection problems.
